Yoga
Yoga is a multi-faceted discipline that promotes physical, mental and spiritual health. The basis of Yoga was compiled and systematized over 2,500 years ago by the sage Patanjali in his "Yoga Sutras".
There are several styles of yoga, but they all have one thing in common: they all have their roots in the Sutras.
I trained as a Yoga teacher with the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Meenakshi Ashram, in Madurai, India.
Hatha yoga, the style of yoga taught in Sivananda centres, is based on a principle that translates as the “union of the mind and body”.
Yoga goes beyond exercise. Sivananda synthesizes the ancient wisdom of yoga into five basic principles that can easily be incorporated into daily life to provide the foundation of healthy living and inner peace:
- Proper Exercise
- Proper Breathing
- Proper Relaxation
- Proper Diet
- Positive Thinking and Meditation
Some benefits of yoga include:
- A calm body and mind
- Increased energy levels
- Improved strength, stamina and flexibility
- Stimulation and balancing of internal organs
- Prevention of chronic health problems
Proper Exercise:
The body is as young as it is flexible. Yoga exercises act as a lubricating routine for joints, muscles and other parts of the body. Not only do they improve circulation and flexibility of the body, they also provide exercise in concentration, meditation and breathing.
Proper Breathing:
Deep yogic breathing cleanses and nourishes the body and has an immediate calming effect. The breathing exercises release vital energy and teach you how to control the mental state.
Proper Relaxation:
When the body and the mind are constantly overworked, their natural efficiency to perform diminishes, and one ways to remedy this state is through proper relaxation. In order to achieve total relaxation, we concentrate on three main aspects: the physical, mental and spiritual.
Proper Diet (vegetarian):
The yogic diet is a vegetarian one, consisting of pure, simple, natural foods that are easily digested and promote health. Simple meals aid the digestion and assimilation of foods. A yogi’s diet does not endanger the environment.
Positive Thinking and Meditation:
Meditation teaches the mind to be still and calm. A quiet mind experiences inner peace and abundant wisdom.
